Things to do and see around Arthur’s Pass National Park

Accessible by road, this is the most common way to visit Arthur’s Pass. An incredible feat of civil engineering including bridges, viaducts, rock shelters, and redirected waterfalls, this is one of the most scenic mountain passes you will ever encounter.

Arthur’s Pass is a mountaineer’s playground, with access options and popular routes for both ice climbers and rock climbers alike. Arthur’s Pass Village, dotted with campsites, hostels, and cafes, is located in the middle of the national park along the main highway, making it the perfect base for any alpine-related activity or sport.  

If you don’t have a car, the TranzAlpine Express train is an incredible way to explore this national park, running from the west coast town of Greymouth to Christchurch in the east in just under five hours. Covering the majestic Canterbury Plains to the almighty Southern Alps, you’ll get to see the entire national park in all its glory.
