Explore Christchurch Gondola

Christchurch gondola is a popular tourist attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Situated in Heathcote Valley, the gondola traverses the slopes of Mount Cavendish in the Port Hills, with stunning panoramic views across Lyttelton Harbour, the Southern Alps, and the Canterbury Plains.

445m above sea level with unforgettable 360-degree views and an array of walking tracks to choose from at the top (as well as a delicious cafe), a ride on the Christchurch gondola is a must-do activity on any trip to the Garden City.

History

The gondola officially opened in 1992 after an extensive planning process, court processes,  public polls, and a controversial construction bill of $NZ11.5 million. After construction was finished, 16,000 tussock plants were planted at the site, along with the addition of new native flora.

Despite the rocky start, the Christchurch gondola quickly became a favourite local attraction, with nineteen cabins able to accommodate up to 812 visitors to the summit per hour. After the 2011 earthquake the gondola closed due to structural damage, but was reopened in March 2013.

Walking Tracks

Bridle Path: This track is the most popular one to do when visiting the Christchurch gondola, and takes you on the historic journey that early European settlers traversed between Lyttelton and Christchurch.

If you want to walk the entire track, it begins at the car park between the gondola and the Lyttelton tunnel portal. A steep walk up the hill, be prepared for a workout - but the stunning views across Lyttelton Harbour and Banks Peninsula's highest peak, Mt Herbert (Te Ahu Pataki) rising above the small settlement of Diamond Harbour makes the climb worth it. At the summit, you can either walk back the same way or continue over the hill to Lyttelton. Alternatively, you can ride the gondola up to the summit and walk down to Lyttelton. Beware that there is a steep decline before joining up with the Bridle Path Road.

Tickets & Opening Hours

Infants up to 5 years of age are free, and children ages 5-15 are $15. Adult tickets are $30, but there is also the option of a more economical family pass (2 adults and up to 3 children) which costs $75.

The gondola is open every day from 10am-4pm. While the ride itself only lasts around 10 minutes, we recommend putting aside at least one hour to make the most of this experience.

Transport

The gondola is situated a 15-minute drive from central Christchurch, with plenty of free parking available at the bottom.

For those catching public transport, public bus number 28 stops at the gondola. To plan your journey, visit the Metro Info website here.
